Lester Kinsolving: Does the President have any reaction to the announcement from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta that A-I-D-S is now an epidemic with six hundred--over six hundred cases?
Larry Speakes: What is A-I-D-S?
[crosstalk]
Kinsolving: It's known as 'gay plague.'
[laughter from the press pool]
Kinsolving: No, it is, and it's a pretty serious thing because one in every three people that get this have died. And I'm wondering if the President is aware of this.
Speakes: I don't have it. Have you…
[Kinsolving scoffs]
Speakes: Do you?

Larry Kramer: Plague! We are in the middle of a fucking plague! And you behave like this!

Speakes: We're… We're researching, and if we come up with any… any, um… any research that, uh, would shed some light on whether gays should cruise or not cruise, we'll make it available to you
[laughter]

Kramer: Plague! Forty million infected people is a fucking plague! And nobody acts as it is--as if it is. Nobody here, either. Nobody in this hospital. Nobody in this city. Nobody in this world! Forty million people is a fucking plague!

Kinsolving: No, but I mean, is he going to do anything, Larry?
Speakes: Lester, I haven't heard him express anything, sorry.
Kinsolving: He has no—has expressed no opinion about this epidemic?
Speakes: No, but I must confess I haven't asked him about it.
Kinsolving: Would you ask him, Larry?
Speakes: Have you been checked?

Kramer: Nobody knows what to do next. Nobody knows what to do next. And we have a president who cares more about the unemployed, and pits people against each other, just like these people are doing, than he cares about us.

[switching tapes]

Speakes: [chuckles] Ah, it's hard work. I don't get paid enough. Uh, is there anything else we need to do here?

[switching tapes]

Kramer: Until we get our acts together, all of us, until we learn to plug in with each other and fight and make this president listen, we are as good as dead.
